Visa Requirements
The following questions will help you in determining whether and how to apply for a U.S. visa to attend the conference.
Can I travel to the U.S. without a visa?
Please see this page to determine whether you are eligible to apply for an Electronic System Travel Authorization (ESTA) instead, which might be cheaper and easier. This is usually allowed if you hold a passport from a country that participates in the Visa Waiver Program, but there are some exceptions. Be sure to apply for the ESTA at least 72 hours in advance. Do not purchase your ESTA from any website other than the one linked above.
What kind of visa do I need?
To attend the conference, you should apply for a nonimmigrant B-1 visa. (This also permits you to engage in tourism during your trip.)
How do I apply for a visa?
Please apply well in advance. Visa applications can take from 1–4 months to be approved and normally require an interview at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. For details, begin here and navigate to the website for the embassy or consulate nearest you for further visa instructions.
How much will it cost?
The non-refundable visa application fee is approximately $185 in local currency. Depending on your nationality, you may also have to pay a visa issuance fee.

Trolley Service
Please note that if you choose to take the trolley from the airport to the conference venue/hotel, you will want to take the Green Line and take the Seaport Village Station, Stop ID 75094.
MTS’ San Diego Trolley is San Diego’s light rail transit network. Its three lines serve many popular areas and attractions, such as Downtown, the Convention Center, SDSU, Old Town, and the Mexican border.
There are two ways to reach the Trolley from Terminals 1 and 2:
City Bus
All three Trolley lines can be reached by taking City Bus Route 992 to the Broadway and Kettner Blvd bus stop in downtown. Once off the bus, the UC San Diego Blue Lines can be accessed from the America Plaza Station on the corner of Broadway and Kettner Blvd and the Orange Line can be accessed from the Courthouse Station. The Sycuan Green Line can be accessed from the Santa Fe Depot Station on Kettner Blvd, one block north of the bus stop.
TROLLEY → TERMINAL Shuttle Service
Passengers can also access the Sycuan Green Trolley Line by taking the Rental Car Shuttles at the transit islands at Terminals 1 and 2. When the driver is notified, the shuttle drops passengers off on the north end of the airport, just one block from the Middletown Station. Passengers proceed by crossing Pacific Highway and walking one block northeast on W. Palm Street to the station on the left.
For those passengers wishing to catch the Trolley → Terminal shuttle from the Middletown Station, they should proceed one block Southwest on W. Palm Street and cross Pacific Highway to airport property. A blue shuttle stop is located on Admiral Boland Way. Rental Car Shuttles stop there on regular intervals (typically less than 10 minutes apart). To access a map showing stops and real time shuttle locations go to sdapublic.etaspot.net.

Local Information about San Diego
Languages
English is the primary and de facto official language used in San Diego, California, with Spanish widely spoken as the second most common language.
Weather
San Diego in early July (including the week of ACL 2026, July 1-8) typically features warm, comfortable summer conditions that are ideal for visitors. Daytime temperatures usually reach the mid‑20s Celsius (mid‑70s to around 80°F), while evenings cool to the high teens (mid‑60s F), creating a refreshing contrast between day and night. Weather is predominantly sunny and very dry, with little to no rainfall expected, although mornings may begin with a light coastal cloud layer that typically clears by midday. Gentle ocean breezes help moderate temperatures and keep humidity comfortable, making conditions pleasant for both indoor events and outdoor activities. Overall, attendees can expect consistently mild, sunny, and enjoyable weather throughout the week.
Currency
The official currency used in San Diego is the US Dollar. Several major banks and ATMs are located within walking distance or a short drive from the venue.
Power Plugs/Outlets
The United States uses Type A and Type B electrical outlets, with a standard voltage of 120 volts and a frequency of 60 Hz. Type A plugs have two flat parallel pins, while Type B plugs include an additional round grounding pin for increased safety. Travelers from regions such as Europe, the UK, or Switzerland will typically need a plug adapter, and in some cases a voltage converter if their devices are not compatible with 120V systems
Clothing
Clothing recommendation: Bring light jackets; temperature differences between morning/evening and daytime can be significant, so a medium-weight jacket is advisable.
Water
Water served at local establishments undergoes filtration and is safe for consumption. Although the municipal water supply complies with all safety regulations, a slight chlorine scent may occasionally be present. For individuals with heightened sensitivities or specific hydration preferences, bottled water is always an alternative.
Local Customs (Do’s and Don’ts in San Diego)
Do’s
DO stand on the right, walk on the left: When using escalators (like at the airport or shopping malls), stand on the right side so people in a rush can pass you on the left.
DO expect “sticker shock” at checkout: The price you see on a price tag or menu is not the final price. Sales tax (around 7.75% in San Diego) is calculated and added at the cash register.
DO make small talk: Americans are incredibly friendly and conversational. Cashiers, waiters, and strangers in line will likely ask, “How are you doing today?” A short, polite “Good, thanks! How are you?” is all that is expected.
DO look at the fine print on menu water: As mentioned before, if a restaurant waiter asks if you want “still, sparkling, or tap water,” choose tap water if you want it to be free. Saying “still” usually results in an expensive bottle of water added to your bill.
Don’ts
DON’T smoke on the beaches or in parks: San Diego has incredibly strict smoke-free laws. Smoking cigarettes or e-cigarettes (vapes) is completely banned on all public beaches, boardwalks, parks, and outdoor restaurant patios.
DON’T drink alcohol in public spaces: You cannot walk down the street, boardwalk, or sit on the beach with an open beer or cocktail. Alcohol can only be consumed inside licensed establishments or designated private areas.
DON’T cross the street anywhere you want: “Jaywalking” (crossing the street outside of a marked pedestrian crosswalk or against a red light) can result in a hefty fine from the police. Always wait for the white “walk” signal.
DON’T underdress for the evening: San Diego has beautiful daytime weather, but because it is on the Pacific Ocean, the temperature drops significantly as soon as the sun goes down. Don’t leave your hotel for the day without a light jacket or sweater.
DON’T pet or feed the sea lions: If you visit La Jolla Cove to see the famous wild sea lions, keep your distance (at least 50 feet or 15 meters). It is illegal to harass, feed, or get too close to them, and local lifeguards will publicly call you out on a loudspeaker if you try to take a selfie too close to them.
Public Transportation Etiquette
Sound and Space
- Always use headphones: Listening to music, watching videos, or having a phone call on speakerphone without headphones is the number one complaint among San Diego riders.
- Keep your headphones plugged in while on board.
- Keep your belongings to one seat: Do not use the empty seat next to you as a shelf for your backpack, purse, or shopping bags if the transit vehicle is filling up.
- Keep your items on your lap or between your feet.
- Never put your feet on the seats: Propping your shoes up on the seat across from you is a major etiquette violation and can actually result in a legal citation from transit security.
Priority Seating and Space
- Move for seniors and disabled riders: The seats closest to the doors on both buses and trolleys are clearly marked with blue signs as Priority Seating. If you are sitting there and someone who is elderly, pregnant, or has a disability boards, you are expected to stand up and offer them the seat immediately without being asked.
- Let people off first: When boarding buses/trolleys and the doors open, stand to the side of the door on the platform and let arriving passengers exit completely before you try to step inside.
Food, Drink, and Trash
- No eating allowed: To keep vehicles clean and prevent unwanted pests, eating food on board buses and trolleys is strictly prohibited by MTS regulations.
- Drinks must have lids: You can bring a beverage on board (like a coffee or water bottle), but it must have a secure, spill-proof lid.
- Alcohol is completely illegal on all public transit.
Tipping
Tipping is appreciated and usually honored in the US; it is how service workers make their living. Tip 15% to 20% at sit-down restaurants, $1 to $2 per drink at a bar, and $2 to $5 for hotel porters or rideshare drivers.
Shopping, Dining, and Entertainment
The conference venue is near plenty of options for shopping, dining, and entertainment, accessible by foot, bike, car, or public transportation. Visit these nearby downtown neighborhoods: Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, Embarcadero & Marina District, East Village, and Golden Hill.

Best Transportation to Get Around the City
The Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego sits just a few miles from San Diego International Airport (SAN), offering convenient access for arriving attendees. The MTS Bus Route 992 provides direct service from the airport to Broadway & Kettner Blvd, the appropriate stop for reaching the hotel. Taxis from the airport typically range from $13–$16. Once at the venue, attendees can comfortably explore nearby waterfront destinations—including the Marina District, the Embarcadero, and the Gaslamp Quarter—on foot. For travel to other parts of the city, the Seaport Village Station, served by the MTS Trolley Green Line, is located adjacent to the hotel.

Practical Information
Important Notes
City & Traffic Awareness: Stay alert in high‑traffic zones. Use crosswalks and signals and avoid jaywalking, especially downtown where vehicle, bike, and scooter traffic is dense.
